Supporting Teens with Big Emotions, Stress Responses, and Safety Concerns

Teen Emotional Regulation, Safety & Stress Responses Support

Assessment Information Sheet – HarbourLight Psychology Melbourne

Supporting Teens with Big Emotions, Stress Responses, and Safety Concerns

Adolescence is a period of rapid emotional, social, and neurological development. Many teenagers experience strong emotions, impulsive reactions, or changes in behaviour as they learn to manage stress, independence, and increasing expectations.

For some young people, emotional reactions such as anger, irritability, shutdown, or risk-taking behaviours become more frequent or intense and begin to affect wellbeing, relationships, or safety. These responses are often understandable reactions to stress or overwhelm, particularly when demands exceed a young person’s current coping skills.

At HarbourLight Psychology, we provide developmentally informed, evidence-based psychological support to help adolescents understand their emotional responses and build regulation skills.

Difficulties with emotional regulation and stress responses can present in a range of ways, including:

Common Experiences for Teens

Emotional & Behavioural Responses

    • Frequent anger, irritability, or emotional outbursts

    • Feeling overwhelmed, shut down, or emotionally numb

    • Sudden mood shifts or intense emotional reactions

    • Difficulty calming down once emotions are activated

Impulsivity & Safety Concerns

    • Acting without fully considering consequences

    • Risk-taking behaviours that cause worry for the teen or others

    • Difficulty managing urges when stressed or emotionally activated

    • Regret, guilt, or confusion after impulsive actions

Stress or Trauma-Related Responses

    • Heightened alertness, startle responses, or feeling constantly on edge

    • Avoidance of reminders linked to stressful or overwhelming experiences

    • Sleep difficulties, nightmares, or intrusive thoughts

    • Physical symptoms such as tension, headaches, or fatigue

These experiences often overlap with anxiety, low mood, school stress, family difficulties, or adjustment to challenging life events.

Therapy Process for Emotional Regulation & Safety Support

Therapy provides a structured, supportive space for teens to explore what may be contributing to emotional reactions and to build practical skills for managing stress and impulses.

How Therapy May Support Teens

Therapy may help adolescents to:

• Understand emotional and stress responses

• Develop skills to help regulate strong emotions

• Support improvements in impulse control and decision-making

• Explore ways to reduce distress linked to stress or overwhelming experiences

• Support the development of a greater sense of safety and self-control

• Support improvements in communication with family and supports

Support is paced carefully and focuses on skill-building rather than blame or punishment.

Approaches Commonly Used

Support is grounded in evidence-based psychological approaches commonly used in general practice, including:

• Psychoeducation: Understanding emotions, stress responses, and regulation

• CBT-informed Strategies: Identifying and responding differently to unhelpful thought and behaviour patterns

• Skills-Based Support: Emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and problem-solving skills

• Acceptance-Based Approaches: Supporting emotional flexibility and values-based choices

• Strengths-Focused Work: Building confidence and resilience

Where appropriate, collaboration with GPs, schools, or other supports may form part of the support process.

Therapy can support impulse control, decision-making, and exploring safer ways of managing emotions and stress.

    Will parents be involved?
Parent involvement is discussed collaboratively and depends on the teen’s age, needs, and preferences.
